PREVIEW: Boldmere St. Michaels (H)
Where:
The Stotto Stadium, Farley Way, Quorn LE12 8RB
When:
Saturday 18th of January 2025 (3:00pm KO)
The Reds return to The Stotto Stadium on Saturday, looking to improve their home form and bounce back from the Long Eaton United defeat last time out. Quorn didn’t dwell on that result and won an important three points at Sporting Khalsa last Saturday.
Quorn’s Form:
Cain Noble’s seventh goal of the season was the difference last weekend as Quorn completed the double over Sporting Khalsa. Whilst the Reds might not have been at their sensational best, the resolute performance in the West Midlands was the perfect response to the 3-2 defeat at home to Long Eaton United the previous weekend. Overall the Reds have won five of the last six with a 4-1 win at home to Shepshed Dynamo on Boxing Day alongside wins at Coventry Sphinx (5-0), Sutton Coldfield Town (2-0) and Anstey Nomads (3-2).
Boldmere St. Michaels Form:
The Mikes have won just once away from home since late September, a 1-0 victory at Racing Club Warwick just before Christmas as Oliver West scored the only goal of the game. Recent trips have seen a 3-0 defeat at Wellingborough Town, a 2-1 reverse at local rivals Coleshill Town, a 1-0 loss at Worcester City and a 3-1 defeat at AFC Rushden & Diamonds. Prior to that run of defeats there were draws at Coventry Sphinx and Shepshed Dynamo. Overall Boldmere have won three of the last six, with the most recent result a 2-1 win at home to Shepshed at the weekend.
One to Watch:
Liam Murphy is still top-scorer for the Mikes, but his last goal came at the start of November, before he left for Bedworth United. The goalscoring burden has fallen to Kevin Ngombi who has scored four in his nine appearances, including a hat-trick in the 4-0 win at home to Rugby Town, and Boldmere’s only goal in the 4-1 derby day defeat at home to Sutton Coldfield Town.
Last Time:
With Paddy Webb and Courey Grantham on the bench, Ryan Beswick’s side went in to the match without their top two goalscorers. However, you wouldn’t have known it from the confident performance that the Methodists strung together throughout the opening 45 minutes.
Jonathan Brown was kept busy between the posts for Boldmere, and some excellent defensive work from the Mikes looked as though it might be able to hold off the marauding visitors. Sure enough, Quorn were unable to break the deadlock in the first half.
Just before the hour mark, the decisive moment came, Zak Goodson whipped in a delightful corner that Mason Frizelle attacked with gusto, handing Quorn a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. The Reds had to work for their fourth clean sheet of the season as Boldmere made a fist of it in the final 20 minutes.
