The Reds welcome Wellingborough Town to The Stotto Stadium on Saturday, looking to edge ever closer to the Midlands Division title. A win on Saturday combined with Coleshill Town taking anything off Corby Town would trigger a title celebration in Quorn.
Quorn’s Form:
Ryan Beswick’s side are now unbeaten in eight league games, with seven wins dating back to the Long Eaton United defeat at the start of the year. That run has seen home victories versus Boldmere St. Michaels (4-1), Corby Town (3-0), Coleshill Town (3-0) and Bedworth United (6-0). Overall, at home, Quorn have won 12, drawn three and lost one, scoring 52 and conceding 13.
Wellingborough Town’s Form:
The Doughboys have slid to ninth in the table, on the verge of falling out of the race for playoffs after a stretch which has seen them winless in their last five matches. Town had last weekend off, and will have welcomed the time to regroup after back-to-back defeats, 3-1 away to Corby Town and 3-0 at home to Hinckley LR. Prior to that Wellingborough earned a good point in a 1-1 draw away to Darlaston Town but that was on the heels of a 2-0 defeat away to Racing Club Warwick. The other result in their winless streak was a 2-2 at home to Coventry Sphinx, which saw them level from the spot in the 95th minute.
One to Watch:
With 12 goals in 33 appearances, Will Jones is the main goalscoring threat. Town’s best spell in recent months was spearheaded by Jones as they collected seven points in three games. The 2-2 draw with Coventry Sphinx, as well as, a 3-0 win at Rugby Town and a 3-2 victory at Worcester City saw Jones add five goals to his tally. Wellingborough have scored just twice in the four games since, with Jones unable to get on the scoresheet.
Last Time: Wellingborough Town 1-2 Quorn (16/11/2024) Northern Premier League Midlands Division
A goal just before half time from Courey Grantham gave Quorn the lead and, after a disappointing equaliser moments later, Quorn won it in the second half, after going down to 10 men, through Zak Goodson.
Wellingborough came out and started the slightly better of the two teams and had a brilliant first opportunity which came though Will Jones who’s powerful effort was denied by Tom Allsopp. In the 11th minute, Quorn had some lovely build-up play which resulted in an effort for Grantham which was denied by the Wellingborough keeper Dan Moore.
Wellingborough then came forward on a fantastic counter attack with a ball forward that was intercepted by Jack Samples. There was a fantastic through ball to Caine Noble but he unfortunately couldn’t quite convert his opportunity.
The rest of the first half was very stop start. Reece Fyfe was booked just before the break to cries of derision from the Quorn travelling support. This didn’t affect the Reds, with the first goal coming a few minutes after, courtesy of a brilliant counter attack where Grantham passed the ball to Noble who then played a superb one-two back to Grantham who finished off a fantastic move by the visitors.
Unfortunately for the Reds, there was a lapse in concentration from the players and after the restart and Wellingborough were able to capitalise as Jordan Graham rounded Allsopp and put the ball in the back of the net.
Quorn started the second half brightly and within the first few minutes, the ball was played out wide brilliantly to Goodson who saw his effort on goal go wide. In the 61st minute, Goodson was again in the action when he was booked for a heavy challenge whilst many of the Reds’ players argued they should have been awarded a foul for a challenge in the build-up that saw Grantham’s lip split open.
Grantham argued too strenuously and was booked for dissent, with a second yellow produced almost immediately. Down to ten men Quorn had it all to do. Wellingborough had a good go in the few minutes that followed and forced Allsopp into a fantastic save. In the 76th minute Quorn won a freekick on the edge of the box, but Fyfe fired in an effort that was easily saved by the Wellingborough keeper.
Quorn were courageous in their performance, despite being down to 10 men, and Goodson delivered the winning strike when he received the ball on the edge of the box and fired a brilliant shot into the back of the net.
