REPORT: Darlaston Town 0-3 Quorn
By Kurt Barnes
Quorn were comfortable winners as they defeated playoff hopefuls Darlaston Town 3-0. Anyone that thought the Reds would be on the beach, having wrapped up the title the previous weekend, were in for a rude awakening as Ryan Beswick’s side played some of their best football of the season. Billy Kee opened the scoring, with Cain Noble doubling the advantage. Youngster Oscar Marshall wrapped up the points after the break.
Quorn started brightly and saw their first chance on five minutes. Jack Samples’ powerful shot drifted wide after Kee’s initial shot was blocked. A few minutes later saw Darlaston’s first effort on goal, but it was a comfortable save for Tom Allsopp. Mason Frizelle found himself in an unlikely position, on the attack in the 12th minute and decided to go for an acrobatic overhead kick, but couldn’t get the connection he hoped for.
Ten minutes later, the Reds mustered up a really good chance to take the lead when Paddy Webb got into a great position. Webb crossed the ball in to Noble, but his connection wasn’t to his usual standard. The breakthrough finally came in the 30th minute, as Reece Fyfe floated in an inviting corner that Kee met at the back post and powered home a bullet header.
Jordan Gough found himself free with a header a few minutes later but unfortunately it was an easy save for “Darlo” keeper Stan Amos. On the 39th minute it was 2-0 to the Methodists as Gough played an excellent ball up to Noble, who received the ball inside the box and steered his shot in off the post.
The second half started well for Quorn, who were pushing for the third goal, and just a couple of minutes in Webb had a chance to get on the scoresheet, however his effort went agonisingly wide of the post. Samples was unlucky not score when he went on a brilliant run on the hour mark but put his effort to close to Amos.
Darlaston hadn’t really troubled the Reds but probably should have scored with fifteen minutes to play but Allsopp was able to watch as their best chance sailed wide. Substitute Marshall finished a superb move with a deserved third goal.
Next up for the Reds is a home game as they Rugby Town on Saturday afternoon (3pm KO). This is set to be another memorable occasion as the club will be awarded with the trophy for their remarkable league win. The club are keen to swell the numbers and have the village share in an historic achievement, so supporters are being asked to wear red on the day. Anyone in red can get into the game for just £2.00, instead of the usual £10.00.
