REPORT - Loughborough Students 0-1 Quorn
By Kurt Barnes
Quorn won a scrappy game against Loughborough Students to stretch their unbeaten streak to 12 league games, and their away streak to 19. Mason Frizelle scored the only goal of the game, which was the 100th league goal of a remarkable season for the Reds, who also chalked up their 21st clean sheet, moving them to within four points of the century mark.
The Methodists had the first chance of the game on the 10th minute when Paddy Webb received the ball in a dangerous area and forced a good save out of Luke Skinner. The Students had an opportunity of their own just three minutes later, sending a low ball across the face of goal, fortunately for the Reds no one got a touch and Jasper Tetlow was able to clear the danger.
Quorn broke the deadlock in the 24th minute as Frizelle headed in a corner at the back post. The goal had been coming and it felt as though a second would follow shortly after. Industrious midfielder Recce Fyfe had the ball in a fantastic position on the edge of the box but his audacious attempt went just over. Zak Goodson was pushed to the ground inside the box, with the Referee in close attention, but he waved away the furious appeals for a penalty.
Just after the half hour mark Goodson hit the post from close range as Loughborough’s goal was living a charmed life. The Reds were dominating and looking for a second before the break. Rodrigo Goncalves was in with a good chance just before the break, but appeared to be in two minds as to whether to shout or cross, and winded up doing neither as the ball sailed out of play. Tom Allsopp was called into action once in the half, athletically keeping out a free kick that missed everyone and looked destined to find the net. The Quorn ‘keeper had other ideas though, protecting a 21st clean sheet of the season.
Whilst the first half was full of chances, the second period failed to capture the same spark. The Scholars gave a poor account of themselves as an attacking force and committed numerous niggly fouls to stop the Reds from finding any flow. The best chances in the second half fell to Goodson and Courey Grantham. Goodson looked certain to seal the win, but saw his close range shot blocked, and Grantham, making his first start of 2025 after a spell on the sidelines, shot across the face of goal, but couldn’t bend it in from a tight angle.
There’s a busy Easter period for Quorn as they entertain Racing Club Warwick on Saturday (3pm KO), before a short turnaround and a final away game of the season when they make another short trip, this time to Shepshed Dynamo on Easter Monday (1pm KO).
