REPORT | Quorn 0-0 Corby Town

Quorn were held to a 0-0 draw by a dogged Corby Town side on Saturday afternoon. Despite dominating the second half, the Reds couldn’t find a way past an inspired Dan Wallis in the Steelmen’s goal.

The first half was a little short on chances for both sides as neither could muster much in the attacking third. Reece Fyfe had Quorn’s first shot of the match but his effort was over the bar from the edge of the box. Connor Tomlinson was the first to work the keeper for the visitors, but his tame effort was easily handled by Charlie Woods.

The match sprung to life in the 23rd minute as Jack Keeble tried an audacious chip for Corby, Woods got just enough on the lob to force it over the bar though. At the other end Courey Grantham played through Paddy Webb, but his effort was well-saved by Wallis. Reece Fyfe headed the follow-up goal bound, only to see his effort cleared off the line by a covering defender.

Cain Noble headed a chance wide for Quorn before Tristan Thompson-Matthews hit the crossbar for Town. Webb had another chance as the half came to a close, but pulled his shot wide under pressure from a defender.

Wallis made the save of the game just after the restart, denying Devon Kelly-Evans when the midfielder broke away on the counter. The Corby keeper came to the rescue again in the 71st minute, making a superb save with his feet to deny Webb. Grantham was next to test Wallis, but his effort, at full stretch, only managed to draw a comfortable save.

Silvio Bello made a trademark run in to the opposition box and played the ball in to the middle. Grantham stepped over the cross, leaving it for the late-arriving Noble to wind up and smash, but a desperation block denied the midfielder his tenth goal of the season. Despite Quorn’s dominance in the second half, Tomlinson almost stole it at the death for Corby, beating Woods but seeing his curling effort fall the wrong side of the post.

Next up for the Reds is a visit from local rivals Anstey Nomads, in what is sure to be a fiercely contested match. The Nomads head to Farley Way on Tuesday the 23rd of January (19:45 KO) in the first meeting of the two sides since Quorn’s vital 1-0 win at Cropston Road at the end of last season. That victory secured second place and a playoff spot to earn promotion, joining Anstey in step four.
