REPORT | Quorn 2–1 Sporting Khalsa

Quorn returned to winning ways with a narrow 2-1 win at home to, highly fancied, Sporting Khalsa. Paddy Webb’s first half brace was enough to secure the points, despite James McGrady’s late effort, which made for a nervy finish.

Khalsa shaded the early exchanges, earning plenty of possession, but unable to trouble Charlie Woods in the Quorn goal. An injury to Cain Noble forced an early change for the hosts, with Webb entering the match in the 15th minute.

Just five minutes later, top-scorer Webb was on hand to tap in a Charlie Marzano pull back. And it was Webb again, in the 27th minute, that was in the right place to finish off a silky move that involved Devon Kelly-Evans as well as forwards Tyrell Shannon-Lewis and Courey Grantham. The latter two linked up superbly throughout the match, creating numerous chances.

Woods was called in to action for the first time, comfortably collecting a tame effort from Robbie Bunn on the half hour mark. Webb made another couple of chances for himself in the first half, firing wide in the 35th minute, and high in the 42nd, proving a constant menace.

The Reds controlled the match with ease and should have finished the contest in the 81st minute when Sam Arnold gifted possession to Shannon-Lewis. The busy forward played in Webb, but Arnold made amends with a great save. Shannon-Lewis was first to the loose ball, but his effort was blocked.

Sporting made a fist of it for the final ten minutes, and McGrady should have done better when he had a free header at the back post in the 84th minute, but he headed wide. Good work from Keiron Miller provided an assist for McGrady’s goal in the 89th minute, but Quorn saw out the remaining moments of the match for a victory that lifts them back in to the playoff places.

The Reds have a break from League action next week, as they travel to Stafford Rangers in the first round of the FA Trophy.
