REPORT: Quorn 4-1 Coventry Sphinx (Abandoned)

A brief lightning storm saw a bewildering abandonment of a match that Quorn dominated for the 72 minutes that were played. Referee Gary Caley took the players off and, arguably, called the match off way too early, much to the delight of a beleaguered looking Sphinx side.

Cain Noble opened the scoring in the 11th minute, forcing home Silvio Bello’s cross from the right after Zak Goodson had picked the full back out with a free kick. Noble added a second just 12 minutes later, as it looked as though a rout was on the cards. Paddy Webb had reversed the ball to Goodson, who put the ball across goal for Noble to poke home.

Coventry did pull one back with their only highlight of the afternoon as Omotolani Omotola scored a hotly disputed goal that the Reds felt was offside, but the respite was brief as Courey Grantham converted a penalty that he won on the stroke of half-time for a 3-1 lead.

Sphinx could barely get out of their own half, only looking to carry threat from set-pieces, and the day went from bad to worse when youngster Jack York scored his first goal for the Reds, just 30 seconds after coming off the bench. Just three minutes later the players were taken off the pitch, and despite Loughborough Students being able to finish their match, just two miles away, the Referee took the mind-boggling decision to abandon the match, way earlier than he needed to.
