REPORT | Quorn 4-2 Coventry Sphinx

Quorn scored four in back-to-back matches as they survived a scare at home to Coventry Sphinx. Ryan Beswick, Devon Kelly-Evans, Cain Noble and Ant Carney all scored as the Reds held off a determined Sphinx side that twice equalised through Jack Downes and Jac Redhead.

Sphinx shaded the early exchanges but found chances limited before The Methodists found their groove and set up camp on the edge of Coventry’s box. Beswick opened the scoring in the 31st minute as the hosts consistent pressure finally off. The former Nuneaton Borough midfielder took his time and produced a stunning strike from almost 30 yards.

Sphinx were level before the break though as Downes was afforded time and space to pick his way through the defence and score an equaliser that was against the run of play. Kelly-Evans restored Quorn’s lead in the 49th minute, striking from the edge of the box.

Despite dominating the match, Quorn were guilty of wasting numerous chances, and Coventry punished them with 20 minutes remaining, as Redhead struck from almost 30 yards with a spectacular effort that dipped over Charlie Woods.

Neither side was happy with a point and both went in search of a winner. Courey Grantham applied a deft touch to release Noble in the 76th minute, who scored his fourth in three games. Sphinx pushed for an equaliser, nearly finding one as Reece Fyfe had to clear off the line when Shipman met a Coventry corner with a powerful header. Quorn weren’t content to sit on the lead though, and it was substitute Carney who killed the match off with a fourth for the Reds in stoppage time.

A busy Christmas period continues for Quorn as they visit local rivals Shepshed Dynamo on Boxing Day, before returning home to face fellow playoff hopefuls Hinckley LR on the 30th of December.
