REPORT: Quorn 6-0 Bedworth United
Report by Kurt Barnes
Quorn hit six of the best against a struggling Bedworth United to keep the lead at the top of the Northern Premier League Midlands table at 20 points. A hat-trick from Billy Kee and goals from Ryan Beswick, Zhani Burgess and Luca Alonzi saw the Greenbacks go home empty handed.
Bedworth United came out quickest with a shot that was comfortably saved by Tom Allsopp. A minute later, Paddy Webb was showcasing his talents when he went on an incredible run that deserved a goal but his shot was saved by Liam O’Brien. Quorn didn’t have to wait long to take the lead though. Noble had a shot from just inside the area that was blocked by O’Brien but Kee was following in and took the rebound in stride to lob the keeper from outside the area in the 7th minute.
The contest was effectively over in the 8th minute when Beswick’s initial shot was saved, but the rebound fell straight back to him and he turned in his 13th goal of the season. The fast start continued, when Burgess’ cross found the back of the net. United, who have picked up just one point from the past ten games, had created little but did work Allsopp with a solid effort from the edge of the box.
It was almost 4-0 in the 21st minute as Mason Frizelle’s near post header cannoned back off the post. O’Brien was forced into a string of fine saves to keep the score at 3-0 until the break as Quorn ran riot.
United came close to pulling one back at the start of the second half, only to see Allsopp make a save with his legs, but the Reds were in no mood to allow their visitors any respite as Kee powerfully headed in his second in the 48th minute. O’Brien had made a superb save to deny just moments earlier, but Kee wouldn’t be denied from the resulting corner kick.
Six minutes later Kee wrapped up a sublime hat-trick, finding the bottom corner as he shot on the turn. At 5-0 up, and with the County Cup semi-final on Tuesday in mind, the Reds rang the changes with Kee and Beswick withdrawn. Quorn kept pushing for another goal and were asking questions of Bedworth throughout the second half. There was a sixth goal for the Methodists, who continued to overpower their opponents, as Alonzi received the ball, with the substitute capping off a tremendous display with his sixth goal in ten appearances.
It’s a short turn around for Beswick’s men as they host Loughborough Students on Tuesday evening (19:45 KO) in the semi-final of the County Cup. The Reds have already scraped past Hinckley AFC and Lutterworth Town to reach this stage. The Scholars were runners-up last season, beaten 2-1 in the final by Anstey Nomads, who play in the other semi-final the following week when they travel to Hamilton Park to take on Leicester Nirvana.
