REPORT | Quorn 6-1 Gresley Rovers

A Tyree Wilson brace headlined a Red rout at Farley Way as Quorn demolished their visitors 6-1. Gresley outperformed their league standing in the early running, carving out the best of the early chances, but Jamie Sleigh fired wide in the 4th minute. Courey Grantham had Quorn’s first notable effort, but his shot was too close to Aiden Sharpe in the Rovers’ goal.

Wilson opened the scoring with a sensational volley from 20 yards out in the 20th minute. Solid build-up play saw the ball pulled back to the deadly forward, as he drilled one in to the bottom corner for the 1-0 lead. There was virtually only one side in it from that point as top-scorer Paddy Webb added a second, just four minutes later, squeezing shot in from a tight angle.

Cain Noble made it 3-0 in the 37th minute as Grantham timed his run down the right, picking out the midfielder at the back post for his third goal of the season. There was still time for Wilson to add his second before the break, as the Reds stole possession from a goal kick and the former Derby County man ran through and calmly finished.

Sharpe lived up to his name in the Rovers’ goal, making good saves to keep the damage down. With Quorn in total control, Rich Lavery was able to rest his front three, perhaps with an eye on the massive FA Trophy tie next weekend. The changes brought no respite for the visitors though, Jack Samples scored within seconds of replacing Wilson.

Sleigh pulled one back for the Moatmen in the 79th minute, but Charlie Jemson was sent off moments later, receiving a second yellow for bring Tyrell Shannon-Lewis down from behind. The rout was completed in the 86th minute as Shannon-Lewis rounded Sharpe and passed the ball in to the net for Quorn sixth of the day, his second goal off the bench in as many matches.

Next up for the Reds is the visit of AFC Telford United in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy. The non-league heavyweights arrive at Farley Way on Saturday for a 3pm kick-off, as Quorn look to reach the first round proper for the first time in club history. If they can carry their September form in to October, it would be hard to count them out against the higher league opposition. The Reds scored 20 times in five matches throughout September, winning four and drawing once.
