PREVIEW: Sutton Coldfield Town (H)

Where:

Farley Way, Quorn LE12 8RB

When:

Saturday 10th of August 2024 (3pm KO)

We begin the 2024/25 season on Saturday, at home to the Royals, whose season actually began last weekend in the extra-preliminary round of the FA Cup. A 2-0 win at home to step five Romulus, in a fierce local derby, has set Sutton away on a positive note. That win came on the heals of a couple of good results in preseason, with cleansheet wins at home to Belper Town and away to Stafford Rangers.

One to Watch:

A familiar name is diminutive winger Reece Morris, who spent several years with our local rivals Shepshed Dynamo. Morris might be as well known for his off-field exploits as he is for scoring on the pitch. An ill-fated appearance on Channel 4’s First Dates ended without a match for Morris.

Last Time:

We failed to beat the Royals last season, the home game ending in a 1-1 draw despite Cain Noble opening the scoring in the 7th minute. Rhys Hilton equalised from the spot six minutes later and Ryan Beswick was sent off for two bookable offences with fifteen minutes to play.

Whilst that was a fairly forgettable encounter, the most recent meeting was far more memorable. Once again the Reds struck first, with Reece Fyfe opening the scoring at the Central Ground back in March. Same as the home encounter, the lead lasted just six minutes, Charlie Dowd equalised. Oscar Tonge gave Sutton the lead shortly before the break, but was dismissed shortly after Alex McSkeane added a third and Reece Gibson a fourth.

Whilst the hosts led 4-1 heading in to stoppage time, there was still plenty of action to come Tyree Wilson pulled one back in the 92nd minute, and when Cain Noble made it 4-3 in the 96th minute it felt as though something special was brewing. However, Gibson ended the dreams of the travelling Reds fans when he made it 5-3 almost immediately afterwards.
