REPORT | Boldmere St. Michaels 3-0 Quorn
Quorn began 2024 with a 3-0 defeat away to Boldmere St. Michaels. Goals from Owen Parry,
Callum Ballinger and Andre Brown saw the home side leapfrog the Reds in the table as Quorn fell to a second consecutive loss.
Parry opened the scoring in the eighth minute as Boldmere hit Quorn on the break after an attack broke down on the edge of their box. It could have been much worse for the Methodists though as Ben Usher-Shipway had already had a goal ruled out for offside in the 2nd minute, and Charlie Woods had to scramble to keep out a corner shortly afterwards.
Charlie Marzano drove forward, as Quorn looked for an immediate response, but his effort was blocked as Boldmere defended well. The Reds gave away a needless free kick in the 16th minute, with an attacker going nowhere. The resulting dead ball was only half cleared and Ballinger struck from the edge of the area. Woods managed to get a hand to it at full stretch, but couldn’t prevent the superb strike hitting the back of the net.
Again Marzano was on the front foot, getting on the end of Quorn’s best move of the match. A long ball forward found Paddy Webb, who laid it off to Tyrell Shannon-Lewis, the powerful striker played it out wide to Marzano who cut in on his left foot and sent a curling shot towards goal that grazed the roof of the net as it went narrowly over the bar.
Shannon-Lewis earned a chance for himself just before the half hour mark, forcing a mistake from Joseph Hull and finding himself through on goal. Charlie Emery was off his line very quickly to narrow the angle and made a superb save to maintain his side’s two goal advantage at the break.
Quorn started the second half on top and looked poised to fight their way back in to the contest as Ryan Beswick and Shannon-Lewis forced Emery in to action within five minutes. It wasn’t to be for the Reds though as Boldmere punished another mistake, Brown scoring a third for the Mikes on another counter-attack.
Richard Lavery’s side refused to give up and continued to look for a way back in to the match as Reece Fyfe latched on to a rebound as Webb’s shot was saved, however, the midfielder’s effort was blocked. There were further chances for Webb and Shannon-Lewis, but ultimately it wasn’t to be for the Reds.
The loss marks just the second time that Quorn have lost back-to-back matches in the league this season, and Lavery will be hoping that his side bounce back in similar fashion to last time, a 3-0 win at home to Bedworth United, as they host Cambridge City on Saturday afternoon (13th of January at 3pm).
