REPORT: Coventry Sphinx 0-5 Quorn
By Kurt Barnes
Quorn hit five of the best against a Coventry Sphinx side who struggled to put in a performance to match the Reds. This now stretches the unbeaten league run to 21 games.
Quorn got off to a flying start scoring within two minutes to ensure it was a perfect start for the Reds. Jack Samples was the beneficiary as some scrappy play saw the full back gain possession in an advanced area, his brilliant footwork enabled him to put a teasing ball in for Cain Noble to score the first of the match.
Just over a minute later, Quorn were in again with a great move forward. Loan signing Luca Alonzi scored in the third minute of his debut, making it 2-0. Coventry Sphinx were awoken after the second goal and for the first time in the match started to show some competitiveness. This amounted to a snapshot that didn’t really cause any problems for Quorn and Tom Allsopp was pretty comfortable in his goal as he watched the ball sail wide.
Sphinx’ short spell didn’t last long and soon Quorn were back on top. Alonzi was in again and was unlucky not to get a second just a few minutes after his first. The game was now starting to become more of scrappy affair and this was working in Sphinx’ favour, when they won a freekick just after the half an hour mark. This ended with Sphinx captain Callum Woodward creating a snapshot which luckily for the Reds sailed wide of the post.
Sphinx found themselves on the back foot once again just under 10 minutes before half time when Alonzi grabbed his second goal of the match. Sphinx keeper Charlie Woods got a hand to the ball but Alonzi’s drive had too much power behind it and found the bottom corner. The Boston United youngster had certainly settled into his first match well and was looking very confident as the Reds sat on a three nil lead at the break.
Coventry started the second half brightly and were first to come forward, attacking down the right hand side, but Jasper Tetlow was on hand to make a great interception to prevent Sphinx from creating a good opportunity. The opposition couldn’t create anything of note despite the positive start to the second half.
Quorn’s first opportunity of the second half came in the 54th minute when another brilliant move from the Reds resulted in Zak Goodson scoring his first goal of the match, with a fantastic low driven shot into the bottom corner of the net to make it 4-0. Quorn were now starting to get into the second half and created two chances not long after.
Substitute Rodrigo Goncalves saw his effort on goal blocked and the ball bounced to Alonzi who was unfortunate to see his shot go over the bar. Sphinx’s defending was now starting to improve and they were starting to make it more difficult for the Reds to break them down. However, Sphinx weren’t creating much going forward and Quorn eventually created another chance, more incredible work from Goodson resulted in a corner, where Woods had to put the ball behind.
Sphinx came forward late on but a tame header was straight at Allsopp who barley had to move to make a routine save. Quorn were ready to pile more misery on the opposition, when a bit of individual brilliance from Goodson resulted in a late goal to make it 5-0.
This had been a very enjoyable watch for the travelling Reds fans and the team can be very proud of another impressive performance. The three points for Quorn saw them stretch their lead at the top of the league to 12 points as Worcester City moved into second place with Corby Town falling to a 3-1 defeat at Loughborough Students. Next up for Quorn is a tough trip to Sutton Coldfield Town. The Royals beat Bedworth United 3-1 this weekend and will no doubt be looking to cause the Reds a few problems.
