REPORT: Quorn 3-0 Coleshill Town

By Kurt Barnes

Quorn returned to winning ways with a clinical 3-0 victory at home to Coleshill Town. Paddy Webb’s first half strike and second half goals from Lucas Alonzi and Ryan Beswick’s penalty saw the Colemen leave The Stotto Stadium empty handed.

Coleshill had started the match brightly, with Tom Allsopp called into action, and making a decent save in the fifth minute. Quorn showed signs of a hangover from the disappointing Grantham Town draw and started slowly but got their first shot of in the 20th minute when Alonzi brought a stunning save out of Town ‘keeper Tyrese Warmington. Coleshill put the pressure on Quorn again just a couple minutes later when they came steaming forward, firing a delicious cross in, but failing to connect with it, a let off for the hosts.

It would be the Reds however that took the lead, settling the nerves, as Webb was once again in amongst the goals. Doing what he does best, Webb cut in from the right, curling a wonderful effort from the edge of the box past the ‘keeper into the far side of the net.

In the second half Quorn looked more like the well-oiled machine we’ve seen throughout the season, playing some really positive football. Webb was the first to get a shot off, when he cut in from the right, but this time Warmington was equal to the effort, getting down low to save it.

Webb was in the again with another chance just over 10 minutes later when he beat his man and got a fantastic shot off, only to find it whistle just wide of the post. In the 62nd minute it was to 2-0 to the Methodists as Alonzi got himself on the scoresheet. His tidy finish in the box meant the Reds could breathe a sigh of relief and that they were one step closer to victory.

Quorn finished the job in the 85th minute. Rodrigo Goncalves was through on goal, with only Warmington to beat, but the Colemen’s ‘keeper brought him down in the box, conceding a spot kick and earning a caution from the Referee. Beswick stepped up to make it 3-0, wrapping up an impressive victory for the Reds.

Next up for Quorn is another home tie, as Bedworth United travel to Farley Way. The Greenbacks find themselves at the wrong end of the table, looking over their shoulder at Rugby Town, who occupy the final relegation place, and managed a battling 2-1 win against Hinckley LR on Saturday. Results elsewhere meant that Quorn stretched their lead at the top of the NPL Midlands table to 20 points, requiring just a further 17 points from their 10 remaining fixtures to guarantee the title and a first ever promotion to step three.
