REPORT: Rugby Town 0-6 Quorn
By Kurt Barnes
Quorn won emphatically against a struggling Rugby Town side who will be very disappointed to have conceded six. This means the unbeaten streak is stretched to 19 games. The first goal came on the 5th minute through Reece Fyfe and Quorn showed from there on who the better team was.
The game started off with both teams showing energy however Quorn were the more dominant team winning a corner straight off that unfortunately came to nothing. Rugby came forward not long after and looked like creating a really good opportunity on the counter however the shot was saved down low by Tom Allsop. It didn’t take Quorn long to take the lead and on only the 5th minute there was a brilliant ball over the top for Fyfe to latch onto and finish a superb chance past the Rugby Keeper.
Quorn were in again a few minutes after, this time Cain Noble being played in but he was unlucky not to score with his effort on goal going agonisingly wide. Just 10 minutes were played between the first and second goal with Jordan Clarke putting a fantastic cross in after a great move down the left. Tyreace Brown was very unlucky to have turned the ball into his own net.
Quorn kept their dominance up and Rugby found themselves in a spot of bother once again on the 21st minute. This was a fantastic team effort which was started by Fyfe showing excellent spirit winning the ball in the midfield and passing the ball to Ryan Beswick who then gave the ball to Courey Grantham who fired the ball into Clarke who then made it 3-0.
Just when things couldn’t have gone any worse for Rugby, there was another goal for the Reds minutes after. Quorn moved the ball through the Rugby midfield, tearing them apart. Clarke was able to play a fantastic ball into the box where Noble was unmarked and able to tap home a simple chance to make it 4-0.
Quorn continued to show why there are 18 places between the two sides, creating four more tantalising opportunities before half time. Yet another attack from Quorn came from Fyfe who received the ball and had his shot blocked with the ball bouncing to Clarke who had his effort superbly denied by the Rugby Keeper Paul Hathaway.
Jasper Tetlow then was presented with a free header one that came very close to Quorn making it 5-0. Noble, who was having a fantastic first half had an effort on goal go agonisingly close. The last chance before the break came from Noble who once again was causing problems seeing his shot narrowly go wide.
The start of the second half was more of the same with Quorn creating more chances. They were causing problems in the 51st minute and won a freekick which Beswick flashed over. There was a short period where Quorn were perhaps not as dominant as they had been and picked up two bookings through Zak Goodson and Noble.
This was when Rugby were at their best and created something of a chance in the 63rd minute when Rugby Town’s striker Silvano Obeng had a shot but unfortunately for him it was straight at Allsop who made a comfortable save. Rugby couldn’t turn this period into anything of note and Quorn were soon 5-0 up in the 69th minute when substitute Oscar Marshall got his first goal for the club.
The team really enjoyed this one, congratulating the Under 18s player in the celebrations. His finish was an exquisite one into corner that he will certainly take some confidence from. Not much happened after this until the 93rd minute when Grantham got the sixth goal and put to bed a quite breathtaking team performance.
The result maintains Quorn’s nine-point lead over title rivals Corby Town. The focus now turns to County Cup action on Tuesday with a game against United Counties League Premier South side Lutterworth Town. The Swifts will be looking for a cupset and Quorn will have to show resilience and put in another good performance to progress to the semi-final. The Reds are next in league action on Saturday in a massive game against third placed Worcester City.
