REPORT: Wellingborough Town 1-2 Quorn

Report by Kurt Barnes

Quorn won an eventful game against one of the teams inside the top 10, to extend their run of wins in a row to 14 and make it 17 unbeaten. A goal just before half time from Courey Grantham gave Quorn the lead and, after a disappointing equaliser moments later, Quorn won it in the second half after going down to 10 men through Zak Goodson.

Wellingborough came out and started the slightly better of the two teams and had a brilliant first opportunity which came though Will Jones who’s powerful effort was denied by Tom Allsopp. In the 11th minute, Quorn had some lovely build-up play which resulted in an effort for Grantham which was denied by the Wellingborough keeper Dan Moore.

Wellingborough then came forward on a fantastic counter attack with a ball forward that was intercepted by Jack Samples. There was a fantastic through ball to Caine Noble but he unfortunately couldn’t quite convert his opportunity.

The rest of the first half was very stop start. Reece Fyfe was booked just before the break to cries of derision from the Quorn travelling support. This didn’t affect the Reds, with the first goal coming a few minutes after, courtesy of a brilliant counter attack where Grantham passed the ball to Noble who then played a superb one-two back to Grantham who finished off a fantastic move by the visitors.

Unfortunately for the Reds, there was a lapse in concentration from the players and after the restart and Wellingborough were able to capitalise as Jordan Graham rounded Allsopp and put the ball in the back of the net.

Quorn started the second half brightly and within the first few minutes, the ball was played out wide brilliantly to Goodson who saw his effort on goal go wide. In the 61st minute, Goodson was again in the action when he was booked for a heavy challenge whilst many of the Reds’ players argued they should have been awarded a foul for a challenge in the build-up that saw Grantham’s lip split open.

Grantham argued too strenuously and was booked for dissent, with a second yellow produced almost immediately. Down to ten men Quorn had it all to do. Wellingborough had a good go in the few minutes that followed and forced Allsopp into a fantastic save. In the 76th minute Quorn won a freekick on the edge of the box, but Fyfe fired in an effort that was easily saved by the Wellingborough keeper.

Quorn were courageous in their performance, despite being down to 10 men, and Goodson delivered the winning strike when he received the ball on the edge of the box and fired a brilliant shot into the back of the net.

There were a few more free kicks for Quorn in the 84th and 86th minute both didn’t really come to anything and even with 5 additional minutes of added time Wellingborough couldn’t come back from being 2-1 down, much to the delight of the Quorn players and travelling fans who were able to see a memorable victory that now equates to 14 league victories in a row. This is quite some feat and will surely give the players a lot of confidence.

Next up for Quorn is a tough fixture against Darlaston Town who are in 5th position and pushing for the playoffs. Darlaston won a very tough game of their own on Saturday, against Long Eaton United and have another stiff test on Wednesday as they host Anstey Nomads before visiting The Stotto Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
